DESIGNING EMI OPEN-CALL

What we have to do during the kick-off meeting:

  • Agree on a common definition of in-between musicians
  • Finding a better word than "in-between"

And then?

  • Designing the open-call criteria
  • Defining the application form
  • Defining the selection criteria

IN-BETWEEN MUSICIANS IN FRANCE

The definition is based on sociologist Gerôme Guibert’s academic work and this definition comes from ‘Learning And Teaching Popular Music, Sharing Experiences from France’, A Collaborative Discussion Paper by Members of the French Collective RPM

“They form a category, which neither subscribes to legal or economic definition of professional bands nor fits within the frame of amateur practice. Those bands have made the choice to turn professional but music isn't their main means of earning a living. Their economic situation tends to be precarious, but their aim is ‘to become well-enough known to be able devote themselves to music whilst earning a living. They are made up of musicians from diverse walks of life. These bands could also be said to be ‘studying’, in the literal sense of the word, before perhaps committing to becoming professional musicians. But these bands are difficult to categorize because they don’t fit within any category recognized by cultural policy-makers, local authorities or central government.”

IN-BETWEEN MUSICIANS IN EUROPE?

During our study-visits, we observed that:

  • Business models for emerging bands are reproduced out of mainstream models
  • Diversification of activites mainly is a financial constraint as well as a rational choice to keep on working music sector
  • Musicians are more and more part of art collectives and explores different art practices
  • Musicians play more and more a role of “entrepreneur” (especially while they’re starting their career)
  • The ephemeral nature of musician as a job has been reinforced for 10 years

Emerging musicians met during study-visits don't define themselves as "in-between" but identify themselves in the definition

IN-BETWEEN MUSICIANS CRITERIA

Ideas of criteria:

  • Don't make a living out of music
  • First-five years of their career
  • Side-activities experienced (engineer, synchro, community project, etc.) - at least once
  • Social media strategy experienced

TEAM WORK

Work in pair and anwser these 5 questions:

  1. Does the "in-between musician" definition make sense for you?
  2. Do these criteria make sense in your city/country? Why?
  3. Would you think to any other criteria?
  4. Benefit/Drawback for each criteria (for EMI organization, communication, etc.)
  5. Find a better word than "in-between"
