TEACHER-CENTERED LEARNING

ESSENTIALISM

*THERE ARE PARTS OF ESSENTIALISM NECESSARY FOR ALL TEACHERS WHO FOLLOW THIS PHILOSOPHY TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THEIR CLASSROOM

WHY ARE THESE PARTS NECESSARY FOR SUCESS?

*EVERY "GOOD" CLASS ROOM NEEDS TO ALLOW THE TEACHER TO HAVE SOME SORT OF DIRECT INSTRUCTION OVER ONE'S STUDENTS

*PUTTING YOURSELF "FRONT AND CENTER" ESTABLISHES A ROLE MODEL FIGURE WITH AUTHORITY, ALLOWING A CLASSROOM TO RUN EFFECTIVELY

*TEACHERS HAVE HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS

WHY IT ISN'T MY PHILOSOPHY?

FAILS TO RECOGNIZE THE PERSONAL DIFFERENCES OF ONES' STUDENTS

INTERESTS, SKILLS, LEARNING CAPABILITIES, ETC.

STUDENT CENTERED LEARNING

PROGRESSIVISM

*FOCUSES ON STUDENTS INTERESTS WHEN CREATING A CURRICULUM

 CONSTRUCTIVISM

*STUDENTS LEARN BY CONSTRUCTING THEIR OWN KNOWLEGDE

*BETTER ABLE TO ADAPT TO A CHANGING WORLD

SOCIAL RECONSTRUCTION

*FOCUSED ON WAYS WE CAN GET STUDENTS TO MOVE SOCIETY IN A POSITVE MANNER

*PROMOTE ACTIVE STUDENT INVOLVEMENT IN SOCIETY

STUDENT CENTERED LEARNING

EXISTENTIALISM

*EMPHASIS ON THE INDIVIDUAL

*DEVELOPMENT OF PERSONAL MEANING AND PERSONAL UNDERSTANDING

*EACH STUDENT HAS THEIR OWN ACADEMIC GAME PLAN

WHAT IS MY PHILOSOPHY?

My job as an educator is to follow the philosophies of progressivism, social reconstruction and existentialism. I respect and honor the essentialism philosophy when teaching, but I believe personally it fails to acknowledge the power of student generated learning.  I will recognize the interests of my students, leading myself to creating a curriculum around those interests which lead my students to constructing their own knowledge when it comes to problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Beyond the classroom, there are societal issues which my students will be effected by everyday when growing up. School is place where academic standards of the state need to be met; however, school can also be a place for me as a teacher to challenge the young minds in my classroom on a more abstract level. During a classroom session, in accordance to the material, I will ask my students collectively about issues dealing with society (democracy, poverty, environmental pollution, etc.) as way for them actively participate/spread their opinions amongst their peers about a certain topic. This collective flow of thought and opinions on societies issues/matters allows my students to begin seeing the world on a larger scale incorporating everyone's ability to make a positive change in this world if they wish to do so.

Lastly, my role of as a teacher is to become a mentor for my students. Every one of my students has their own passions, desires and ambitions. Once I recognize a child’s specific interests/goals, even if it doesn’t pertain to schooling (math, science, reading, social studies) my goal is to influence that student’s learning through an individual academic game plan. I want all of my students to experience their own “wide-awakeness”. Each student’s individual game plan will lead a specific student to creating their own personal meaning/understanding of oneself.

ACTIONS TAKEN BY MYSELF IN THE CLASSROOM

*NO STANDARDIZATION, TESTING OR TRACKING

*MY ROLE IS TO BE A FACILITATOR, COACH AND ENCOURAGER

*BECOME RESPONSIVE TO THE CHANGING OPINIONS, INTRESTS AND ACADEMIC GOALS SET BY EACH OF MY STUDENTS

*THE ONLY "TRACKING" I WILL REFER TO IS THE INDIVIDUAL ACADEMIC GAME PLAN I CREATE WITH THAT STUDENT PERSONALLY

CLASSROOM STRUCTURE

REASONS FOR MY CLASS STRUCTURE

*ALL OF MY STUDENTS DESKS ARE PLACED IN A WAY TO FALICIATE GROUP DISCUSSIONS

*EACH TABLE WILL CONSIST OF 4-5 STUDENTS

*ALLOWS FOR STUDENTS TO BE CLEARLY HEARD AND UNDERSTOOD

*THE CRICLE IN THE MIDDLE IS SUPPOSE TO REPRESENT A "GROUP TIME" MEETING AREA IF I WERE TEACHING YOUNGER CHILDREN (1ST-3RD)

REASONS FOR MY CLASS STRUCTURE

*THE BLACK BOARD REPRESENTS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION (WHERE I PLAN TO ADRESS THE CLASS AS A WHOLE)

* MY DESK SITS AWAY FROM THE BLACKBOARD TO REPRESENT A CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT THAT IS BASED AROUND STUDENT CENTERED LEARNING

*THE HORSESHOE TABLE IN THE BACK WILL BE AN AREA WHERE I TALK TO MY STUDENTS INDIVIDUALLY OR COLLECTIVELY IN SMALLER GROUPS

REASONS FOR MY CLASS STRUCTURE

*COMPUTERS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE CLASSROOM WILL ALLOW STUDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO PRACTICE BECOMING PROFICIENT IN MIRCOSOFT OFFICE PROGRAMS, RESEARCHING CURRENT EVENTS OR LEARNING PROGRAMS BENEFICIAL TO MY STUDENTS ACADEMIC GOALS

*THE 4 BOOK SELVES ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE CLASSROOM WILL BE ORGANIZED INTO GENERS OF SPORTS, ARTS, FICTION, NO-FICTION, MAGAZINES, ETC.

REASONS FOR MY CLASSROOM STRUCTURE

*ALL AROUND THE WALLS OF MY CLASSROOM WILL BE POSTERS PERTAINING TO ART, MUSIC AND USEFUL ACADEMIC RESOURCES SUCH AS TIME TABLES, ALPHABET, STUDENTS INDIVIDUAL WORK, ETC.
