There is only one participant involved in the sport at a time. 

You don’t score in weightlifting. They determine who wins by who lifted the most pounds.

The time limit for an athlete to begin an attempt after being called to the platform is one minute.

The dimensions of the platform you preform on is an 8x8 square platform. 

What is the basic strategy of the sport?

1. Move Quickly from Upper to Lower Body

Olympic Games and Professional.

How has the sport changed since it's origination?

They would use primitive dumbbell weights carved from stone. In the 1960s' the "mass monsters" came. Bodybuilders started to look bigger.  Although men’s weightlifting has always been on the program of the Olympic Games except for at the 1900, 1908 and 1912 editions women started to participate only at the 2000 Games in Sydney. The Olympic weightlifting program has evolved greatly over time. Today weightlifters compete in snatch and clean and jerk and are placed according to their total combined result. From the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney men have competed in eight weight categories and women in seven. This total of 15 events remains unchanged.

What are the major penalties/ fouls of the game? 

You can’t leave platform, no part of you can touch the platform (besides of the bottom of your feet) , you cannot “press out”, must hold the bar steady, and elbows cannot touch thighs during the Clean.

How is the sport played?

There are many different ways to participate in weightlifting so here is how to participate in the "clean and jerk" and the "snatch"

In the ‘clean and jerk’ the barbell is lifted to the chest and then raised above the head. In the ‘snatch’ the barbell is lifted from the floor to over the head in one continuous clean movement. The competition starts with each athlete naming the weight they will start on with the lowest going first. Each lifter has three attempts at each weight and the weight on the bar always goes up until there is one man or  or woman standing. In a tie, the lifter with the lowest body weight is the winner.

A lift is counted as an attempt as soon as it rises above the knee and is only deemed successful if the lifter raises it above he head with locked arms and legs straight until the judge is satisfied it was under control. A buzzer will sound as soon as the judge determines the weight to have been lifted successfully.
