Envirothon 2016

Aquatics and Indian River Lagoon

PROJECT PURPOSE

The main purpose of  my  project (Envirothon) was to learn about the different kinds of animals, plants, and other organisms in the ecosystem. The program was also trying to raise awareness to the ecosystem and the area around it. We went to a competition at the end of the year, and we tried to answer as many questions correctly in a given time.

PROJECT OUTCOME

At every Envirothon practice, and at the competition, I learned something new. I thought this was great because I put in a lot of time and effort studying most days. This is one great outcome of joining the Envirothon team, but there are some others. Although I learned a lot of new terms and ideas within the science universe, I also learned how to cooperate with a team, and use communication to discuss scientific ideas. This won't only only help me when dealing with science, it will also help me in my future.

PROJECT OUTCOME

During the Envirothon 2016 competition we encountered many scientists. They were the people at each question  table, teaching us about the wildlife in the ecosystem. They would always explain to us the answers of the questions, exspecially

PROJECT OUTCOME

The Envirothon program had a large impact in the community, mostly in our ecosystem. In the Envirothon program we each had to help out the lagoon by picking up trash and cleaning the waters. We also helped the community by learning about it. By learning about the community, people become more aware of the problems it faces and the help it needs.

CONCEPTS LEARNED/MASTERED

During our Envirothon project, every person was assigned to a category of science in the competition. There are a total of five categories; Forestry, Wildlife, Aquatics and Indian River lagoon, Soils, and one random one (this year it was Invasive Species).  I was assigned to the group "Aquatics and Indian River Lagoon". In this group I had to research and present information on everything from wetlands to the fish of the lagoon.

CONCEPTS LEARNED/MASTERED

Before the competition, we had to research our categories of science. Since I had to research Aquatics, I had to learn about everything that was related to the Indian River Lagoon, and anything that had to do with water. I had to then create multiple PowerPoint slides on it. I worked with a group of people to create this  PowerPoint, as it was a long process.

CONCEPTS LEARNED/MASTERED

During the Envirothon program, I learned a lot of specific science concepts that I did not know. This was due to me putting in a good amount of time and effort. An example of something I didn't know starting off the program was wetlands. Wetland areas that are soaked with water, either seasonally or permanently, take on the form of a natural ecosystem. If you would like to see the document I had to study, it is below.

AQUATICS STUDY GUIDE

PROJECT PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION

At the competition, my biggest strength was Aquatics. This is because I studied it thoroughly, and made a PowerPoint on it. My second best strength is dealing with Forestry. I really liked Forestry, so I enjoyed learning it. I also have weaknesses. My biggest weakness was birds. We had to study birds for the competition, and I never really got it. My second weakness is Soils. The only reason I have a weakness in Soils is because I didn't really grasp the concept of the Soils groups presentation.

PROJECT PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION

I managed my time by trying to study a page of my Aquatics packet a day. I tried to do this as often as I could, but sometimes I couldn't do so because of after school activities. I studied for upcoming quizzes and tests. I think I could have managed my time a little bit better though.

PROJECT PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION

There are some obstacles that I did not see coming. An example of this is when there were questions on items that were not in the packet I studied. This  is bad because I didn't know the answers to any of the questions, which counted off of our overall score.

PROJECT PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION

An object I overcame when doing my project was when I was told birds would be in the competition. I studied the basic birds for the competition. I thought it would help me do better in the competition. I was right, but I think I could have spent a little more time studying them, which would have earned me a better score.

PROJECT PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION

Though time travel is not possible, If I could go back in time, I would choose to study more on the topic of birds. I think if I studied a little bit more on birds, I would have gotten a better score, and more points for my team. Also, if I studied a bit more on birds, I would be able to use the knowledge in real life, when watching real birds.

PROJECT PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION

Though I studied a good amount, my teammates may not have. This is one thing that is not under my control. I could not force my team members to study, I could just hope. Another thing that was not under my control is the fact that there were some questions that were not on the study sheet. I had no control over the questions on the test, and knew none of them before the competition started.

FINAL REFLECTION

I believe the time I spent on my project was worthwhile. I think that by doing my project, I learned lots of new topics, and ideas I can use later in my life.

FINAL REFLECTION

Next year is a long way away, but under right circumstances, I think i will really enjoy the SIP projects next year. I think it will be fun and entertaining to do again.

FINAL REFLECTION

When SIP projects come around next year, I think I  will participate even if it is only voluntarily. If I don't have any after school activities going on, I think I will have a great time doing the SIP projects again, and learning SO much more about SCIENCE.
