Gymnastics in France

Gymnastics originated in ancient Greece to help strengthen the muscles needed for hand to hand combat.  It was developed around 5th century B.C., and adopted by the Romans when they took over.  It was lost for years after the Roman empire collapsed.

Gymnastics is a solo sport, meaning you compete on your own.  Routine lengths vary based on the performer and style.  There are tons of rules and different styles of gymnastics, but there's a few basics. Generally, the score starts at ten and is lowered for faults or mistakes.  Often, the highest and lowest scores are dropped.  Generally, there is a 12 meter by 12 meter performance area.

The general strategy is to get through the routine with the least amount of errors, which deduct points from your final score.  Penalties include adding, reversing, changing, or omitting major elements.  Equipment used includes trampolines, beams, mats, and bars, depending on the routine.

There are many major competitions for gymnastics, including the Olympic Games.  There are Rhythmic Gymnastics, European Championships, Pan American Games, and many others.   Gymnastics has changed drastically, even through the past ten years.  Skills, shape of the wooden bar, the width of bars away from each other, and the height.  Even the traditional horse was replaced in the early 2000's.  There is even a French Gymnastics Federation.
