Why Worship Through Music?

Songs are for God

Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! (Psalms 95:1-2)

Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise from the end of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that fills it, the coastlands and their inhabitants. (Isaiah 42:10)

Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. (Hebrews 13:15)

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. (Colossians 3:16)

And whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him. (1 Samuel 16:23)

These are the basics of play for church. If you have a steady rhythm and this amount of skill, you can now be part of a music team.

However, if you'd like to get better, the Acoustic Shack offers affordable lessons at our home base in USJ9, Subang Jaya.

Playing as a Band

It's rare that I ever meet a musician who doesn't agree that music is a language. But it's very rare to meet a musician that really treats it like one.

Victor Wooten

Music is like a language, chords and notes are just individual words.

Groove is how you put them together to form a sentence.

How do you get good at a language?

Practice with Intent.

  • Listen to what others are doing
  • Try to follow or add your own thoughts
  • Rinse and repeat.

The lead sets the groove of the song

To follow means to mimic the leads groove

To accompany means to play a 'harmony' to it

Here is one song - four ways. Listen carefully to what each musician is doing, especially for the instrument you will be playing too.

Some parting tips

  • Never lose the groove to find a note

Reinforce. Accompany. Lead
