CURLING - SWEDEN

The sport of curling originated in Scotland during the sixteenth century. The game was played on frozen over lakes with curling stones, rarely ones with handles. Now there are regulations for the stones, indoor ice facilities, and an Olympic team.

The game is played with two teams of four. The first team lines up in order with the lead in front, the second, the vice skip, and the skip. That order has to stay the same. The lead throws the first two curling stones, then the second and vice skip sweep while the skip may (if needed) assist them in sweeping.

In curling, whenever each team curls eight curling irons, that is considered an end. In professional teams one meet is expected to be 73 minutes long, or ten ends all together.

Curling is scored in a very simple manor. After eight curling stones from each team are curled, or an end has passed, someone judges who's stones are closer to button. With every stone that is closer than the opponents closest, one point is gained by the team that is more accurate.

Curling is nicknamed as "chess on ice".
An estimated 1,500,000 people are registered to play.

In the curling rink, there are separate sheets. Each sheet is 138 feet, by 14 feet. There is plenty of technique involved in curling. You have to take in account of how hard to curl the stone, and how fast to sweep.

In curling you need to have a pair of special ice shoes. One has grips on it, and the other has a very slippery feel, so it is easier slide when you are curling the curling stone. You need a broom or brush to sweep. Also you need a curling stone of course.

In this sport you are not allowed to touch any other stones while anyone is sweeping. Also you are not allowed to change the order that you started in.
