The history of the canoe and the kayak go back hundreds of years as a mode of transport, but it wasn’t until the middle of the 19th century that the first official canoe and kayak races were held. In 19th century Britain John McGregor founded the Royal Canoe Club in 1866 and the first competitions were held in the same year.
Canoeing is a paddle sport in which you kneel or sit facing forward in an open or closed-decked canoe, and propel yourself with a single-bladed paddle, under your own power.
A light, narrow, open boat propelled by one, two or four paddlers from a kneeling position, using single-bladed paddles. The strokes are executed always on one side. The boats steering is controlled by the paddlers use of the paddle. The drag of the paddle creates resistance, causing the stern of a canoe to turn in the required direction.
