The fearsome Mongol warriors built a huge empire across Asia in the 1200s. Marco Polo was an explorer. He was about 17 when he left Venice , in Italy. He headed for the center of Mongol Power in China.

Marco Polo told stories of emperor Kublai Khan great feasts, when 6,000 people could fit into the khan's banquet hall. When Polo returned to Venice, he had many amazing stories to tell.

He spoke of money made of paper and stones that burned better than wood. We now know these stones were coal. Did you know? some explorers made up tales about their travels. The travels of Sir John Mandeville told stories of people with heads in their chests!

Marco Polo  was one of the first and most famous  Europeans to travel to Asia during the Middle Ages. He traveled farther than any of his predecessers during his 24-journey along the Silk Road, reaching China and Mongolia, where he became a confidant of  Kublai Khan.
