Accomplishments

  • Ernest Rutherford is famous for his Gold Foil experiment which demonstrated that atoms were made up by a charged nucleus which is orbited by neutrons. 
  • He discovered that the nucleus contains positively charged protons
  • In 1910 his investigation in the scattering of alpha rays led to the postulation of of his concept of the "nucleus".

Nobel Prize

In 1908 Ernest Rutherford won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for "his investigations into the disintegration of the elements, and the chemistry of radioactive substances."
