DIGITIZATION IS INEVITABLE

EVERYTHING WE DO LEAVES A DIGITAL FOOTPRINT

A simple search on Google for my name brings up over 700,000 results. Obviously not all 700,000 results are related to me. I'm not THAT interesting, but everything that I have ever posted on any social media outlet since the beginning of time is online. Even pictures I thought I deleted years ago still show up. Every blog I have ever owned or posted on appears. Even comments on posts or forums are available. Embarrassingly even pictures of me BEFORE puberty are online. Oh gosh.

Disclaimer: The very first image result of the shirtless guy standing in front of a lake is NOT me. That's what I was referencing earlier, how not every search result is related to me.

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF DIGITAL FOOTPRINTS

One of the main affects is that your life will never be private anymore. Leaving a digital footprint is really a never-ending battle against privacy versus security. Anything and everything that has ever been placed on the internet will be there forever. The question is: How much about you is on the internet that you don't even know has been published?

Fun fact: Those SnapChat filters that you use to take selfies are actually facial recognition devices monitored by the government. Happy Snapping :)

GOOGLE IS ONE, BIG NETWORK STRUCTURE

When I google my name, I see links from Twitter, FaceBook, Tumblr, Instagram, LinkedIn, and more. Google has become not only a search engine but a network that has been built upon other networks. Google digitizes society and allows for people to create worldwide networks. Now, even my family in the Philippines can access information about me!

Just like Digital Footprints, there are many pros and cons with Network Structures. One of the best results of Network Structures is that it allows us to connect with people with whom we have mutual friends. It also allows us to find the center of our connections through various measures of network centrality.

THREE CHEERS FOR MACHINES DOING OUR JOBS FOR US--ALGORITHMIFICATION

Google is an algorithm in and of itself. I can type in any formula into the search bar and google can spit out an answer. In the image, I typed "convert 5 inches to feet" into my Google search bar and Google instantly had an answer for me. Math that I previously had to do through dimensional analysis, by hand, can now be done simply through typing it in. It's amazing how much digitization has affected human capabilities.

Digitization is an inevitability. Everything around is slowly starting to become digitalized. In many ways this is frightening, but at the same time it's a beautiful process of creating sinularity.
