By: Xinying Chen

What is WeChat?

WeChat is a free messaging and calling app with over half a billion user--- more than 70 million outside of China (as of December 2015).

It allows people play games, send money to people, make video calls, order food, read the news, book a doctor appointment, and more.

The Characteristics of Digitalization:

  • Digital Footprint
  • Timeless Time
  • Death of Distance
  • Poly-directionality

Digital Footprint

WeChat has records of your messages. Your friends saw everything that you post on your moments, include the unknown people.

Timeless Time

Synchronous (real-time): WeChat has video call, we can see each other at the same time.

Asynchronous: We can reply at someone's convenience late

Death of Distance

No matter where you are, you can receive the messages that from your friends and family.

WeChat allows people to easily connect with family and friends across countries.

WeChat can sent messages from one to one, or one to many.

WeChat is a very population app in China. This app can do much more than send messages. For example, WeChat users can scan each other's QR codes to add friends in the app. People also use it to play games, make payments, make video calls, etc.
