Making a pitch at an interview
by English Trackers
by Bridget ROOTH
Pitch at an interview - what is it?
Tell me about yourself...
Objective of the interview?
Another interview/get the job
Objective of the pitch?
To create interest so interviewer will ask more detailed questions
Qu'est un CV international?
Three stages of the pitch:
Application cover letter or email - review it
List your key skills and competence:
Identify the keywords used in the job description - add them to your list:
planning, promoting, analysing, researching, creating relationships
What you bring to the company - personal attributes become professional:
extra-curricula activities (sport, drama, associations etc)
Do your research thoroughly
Why does the company interest you?
Corporate culture, size, training possibilities, potential career path etc?
Why does the position interest you?
What do you bring to the role that makes you the candidate for this position?
Pitch - what will you say?
“After 3 years at SKEMA and soon to graduate with a master’s in marketing, I’ve chosen to focus on an international route/path."
“Thanks to 1/2/3 internships in this and this domain, I discovered I loved X Y Z.
This experience exposed me to X Y Z of this profession and industry.
Although it gave me an in-depth view of this part of the industry, my second internship made me realize my interest lies in this area..."
"Now I'm looking to work in an company that is focussed on global markets - like yours - so that I can expand my international experience."
Offer feedback from someone else:
“To conclude my last boss would say that I’m always committed to delivering quality work, that I’m keen to take on a challenge and that my positive attitude is an asset to any team.”
Say your pitch and then pause.
Don't be afraid of silence!
Now you've sparked their interest, they will question you more in depth or move onto the set of questions they ask everyone.
It’s not just words (although they need to be selected carefully), it’s a performance.
90% is non-verbal delivery: body language and voice intonation
Push up your sleeves
Keep your hands relaxed so they don’t move too too much
Look the interviewer(s) in the eyes – include every person
Focus on which words are important and put the stress on those
Allow space – silences. It’s not a race
Adapted to the company’s style (startup, SME, corporate)
