Lesson Objective:

(6) Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Fiction.

I will be able to understand and identify the following elements of plot development in a story.

I will be able to define in my own words, these terms:

  • exposition
  • conflict
  • rising action
  • climax
  • falling action
  • denouement

Exposition: Setting up the story

This includes the introduction of characters and the setting

Conflict: What's driving the action?

This is the problem that the characters face during the story.

Rising Action: How does the conflict develop?

These are the events leading up to the main problem or conflict

Climax!  The conflict reaches its peak!

This is where the problem reaches its most crucial point.

Falling action: The conflict is resolved.

This is the part of the story where the characters solve the conflict.

Denouement: How it all ends

And they lived happily ever...

Now, it's your turn.

In your groups, select a story.

Look for the six key elements of plot.

Tell us what you've discovered, in your own way. Write it! Draw it! Act it out!
