If you speak french, you can listen to my interview with BFM Business

II- What Uber had to adapt for India?

III- Who are the local competitors?

=> Conclusion for Uber

=> Conclusion for Startups willing to come to India

UBER IS MEANT TO BE GLOBAL

Founded in 2009 in SF

after Travis Kalanick had the idea in Paris

$5B raised

55 countries

200 cities

YOU CAN'T BE A WORLD LEADER IF YOU ARE NOT IN INDIA

"Growth creates more value than profit"

Jeff Bezos, Amazon CEO

(early investor of Uber & who did invest $2B in India in 2014 with Amazon)

In the internet industry there is only monopolies.

The leader takes all. Period.

Be a world leader or get prepared to be a loser.

Taxi Market in India

2.3 million registered taxis

5 million daily taxi rides

$9 billion value

Smartphone market in India

185M mobile internet users

100M+ Facebook users

3H average spent daily on mobile internet

520M smartphone users in 2020

+45% yearly : biggest growth in the world!

3x growth compared to rest of the world

54% of smartphone users made a purchase with it

I-   Why Uber came to India?

II-  What Uber had to adapt for India?

III- Who are the local competitors?

ADAPT THE HIRING

3 Uber employees by city (city & community managers)
+
Deal with Taxi companies & personal drivers

ADAPT THE FARE

They adapt to India

but just reproduce what worked everywhere :

Better service

for better price

(sometimes even cheaper than rickshaw!)

ADAPT THE PAYMENT MODE

India = 13M credit cards only but 350M debit cards

Paytm = 16M users & $600M transactions yearly

Can be credited with : Debit card, Netbanking, cash in stores

ADAPT THE FEATURE

After the rape by a Uber driver, the New Delhi government banned Uber.

To be available again, Uber had to add 2 new security features : the possibility to share the status of your Uber trip in real time for your emergency contacts & to be able to "send a sos", to call the police in one click.

OTHERWISE, EVERYTHING ELSE REMAINED THE SAME!

I-   Why Uber came to India?

II-  What Uber had to adapt for India?

III- Who are the local competitors?

Ola, the main local competitor

$280M raised

No online payment mandatory but cash to driver possible

It is also possible to book a rickshaw : Meter + 10 roupies!

Biggest fleet size + present in cities where Uber is still not

HOT NEWS = OLA BOUGHT

TAXI FOR SURE
FOR $200M
!

Taxi for sure =
Founded in 2011,
$100M raised,100 cities

Their positioning is on the price with cheap options, with the Tata nano in between Rickshaw and other car's option

CONCLUSION FOR UBER

Oct. 2013 : First launch in Bangalore

Oct. 2014 : India is the biggest market for Uber after USA

Nov. 2014 : Uber to invest $400 million in India to grow.

Big growth, position as premium option but also offering option like UberGo almost as cheap as rickshaws,  best technology, the future is ahead for them in India!

CONCLUSION

FOR STARTUPS WILLING TO COME TO INDIA

1- Yes, you can come easily in India and it worths it

2- Yes, you still have to adapt.

3- No, you can't wait

If you do not come to take the Indian market, local competitors will and it will be over for you.
