Curling originated in the 16th century in Scotland.
It is played by 2 teams of 4 players. The teams alternate throws towards the circular target called the house. The object is to have more stones closer to the center than your opponent after all 16 are thrown.
A typical game is played in 8 ends with 16 stones thrown. A team scores one point for each stone closer than their opponent’s best stone. The lead on your team throws the first two stones while the second and vice sweep. Any of the 4 positions can act as skip but you must have to throw in the order which you started. The hammer will be the last stone of the end which is an advantage. This means the opponent throws first. After the end, the team that scored will start first in the next end.
There is two teams of four players during the game. Curling takes approximated two hours to play. Championship tournaments would be ten hours to play. There is ten ends that each team alternates throwing eight stones each. The object of the game is to have the closest stones
to the button when an end finishes. You earn a point for each stone that is inside the house and is closer to the button than all of the other teams stones. If both of the teams don't have a stone in the house than neither of them get a point. Only one team can score per end.
A sheet of curling ice is dimensioned at 138 ft x 14 ft. The basic strategy to curling is to play an aggressive or conservative game, play the percentage game - a conservative game - you'll make more shots than your opponent, force the opponent to play draws around guards, favor a certain turn based on your opponent's deficiencies, in the early ends play conservatively then play aggressively in the middle and late ends play conservatively to position yourself in a long competition, and play shots your team can make. If a player knowingly breaks a rule they will divulge the breach.
There is a lot of equipment used for this sport. You need to have warm and loose-fitting clothes with gloves & an optional hat. Clean sneakers or rubber-soled shoes. You also need to have great ice, curling stones, and sweeping brooms to play. You can also add later on other supplies such as broom bags, brushes, and removable grippers. Curling is played all around the world and is used in Olympic games. Curling is much different than it was back than. It was played on frozen ponds. They used broomsticks and odd shaped rocks called ''loafies''. Over the years people have started to make and change rules to make the game better.
