Human Impact-Panama Canal

WHO?

  • Theodore Roosevelt, engineers, and other manual labor
WHAT?

  • America had a goal to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and allow ships to go through the canal instead of all the way around South America
WHEN?
  • Early 1900s

Panama Canal-Continued

 WHERE?

  • The canal was built in between South American and North America in the thin piece of land that connected them

WHY?

  • Creating the canal would save time and money for ships traveling to the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, allowing them to travel through instead of adding miles and days to the journey by traveling around South America. Americans took nature into their own hands and made it convenient for them.



Human Impact- Cheronbyl Disaster

WHO?

  • Power plant workers, scientists, people of the surrounding city

WHAT?

  • The power plant of Chernobyl, a full city, blew up with one of it's reactors, releasing tons of radiation into the air-including the surrounding area due to the reactor getting too hot- a violation of safety regulations. The human neglect at Chernobyl made the surrounding land inhabitable for years after and it's still inhabitable.

WHEN?

  • April 28, 1986
WHERE?
  • Chernobyl, Ukraine- Soviet Union

WHY?

  • The reactors and other safety features were not as safe as they could have been. It was neglected, so, when reactor number four blew up, the effects were catastrophic. The human neglect at Chernobyl made the surrounding land inhabitable for years after and it's still inhabitable.

Human Impact- Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

WHO?

  • Exxon Valdez Oil Tanker and crew 
WHAT? 
  • Exxon Valdez oil tanker crashes into Bligh Reef and spills 11 million gallons of oil into the Prince William Sound. Oil is still found today.
WHEN?

  • March 24, 1989
WHERE?

  • Prince William Sound, Alaska

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill- Cont.

WHY?

  • The oil continued to spill into the Prince William Sound for days after the spill before cleanup began. The company could not find their cleanup supplies. Exxon's neglect and unpreparedness allowed much more oil to be spilled than necessary. 

Environmental Impact

Hurricane Katrina

WHAT?

  • Category three Gulf Coast hurricane with 100-140 mph winds 
WHEN?

  • August 23, 2005
WHERE?

  • Gulf Coast- New Orleans
WHY?/WHO WAS IMPACTED?
  • A tropical storm that begins in the Atlantic 
  •  Coast guard rescued at least 34,000 people

Ise Bay Tsunami

WHAT?

An 8.2 rated tsunami

WHEN?

  • January 18, 1586
WHERE?

Ise Bay, Japan

AFFECT?
  • 5,000 deaths and 3,000 injuries
WHY?
  • An earthquake makes a large wave that comes to shore- a tsunami
