Autism

Definition: Autism is a mental condition, present from early childhood, described as difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and using language and some concepts. Autism makes it difficult for them to socially interact and they repeat behaviors.

Causes of Autism

  • Usually Autism is caused by 3 or 5 genes that interact in some way to cause the condition.
  •  Autism has a greater chance of occurring when there is a chemical imbalance, viruses, chemicals, and a lack of oxygen at birth. 
  • There may be more causes.
  •  There are environmental, biological, and genetic factors.
  •  Relatives of Autistic kids can have mild social problems and have a higher rate of maniac depression.

The Autism stats

  • Autism prevalence has went up a lot since 1980.
  •  In 1980 it was reported as being 1 in every 10,000.
  •  1990 it was reported as 1 in every 2500.
  •  In 2012 it was reported 1 in every 88.
  •  The 2016 report is 30% higher than 2012.
  • Autism rates in boys are a 1 in 42. 
  • Autism rates in girls are 1 in 189. 

Detection

  • There are a lot of ways to detect it.
  • No joyful expressions or sounds.
  • No back to back sharing of sounds by 9 months.
  • No babbling by 12 months.
  • No Gestures by 12 months.
  • No words by 16 months.
  • No two word phrases by 24 months.
  • Any loss of speech or social skills at any age.

Treatment of Autism

  • Early intensive behavioral intervention.
  • Good early intervention programs.
  • Help from highly trained therapists/teachers.
  • structured therapeutic activities for at least 25 hours a week.
  • Programs with a multidisciplinary team.
