Chernobyl Disaster

  On 25 April, prior to a routine shutdown, the reactor crew at Chernobyl 4 began preparing for a test.The accident caused the largest uncontrolled radioactive release into the environment ever recorded for any civilian operation, and large quantities of radioactive substances were released into the air for about 10 days.

Shrinking Of The Aral Sea

The Soviet government decided in the 1960s to divert those rivers so that they could irrigate the desert region surrounding the Sea in order to favor agriculture rather than supply the Aral Sea basin.

The Ring Of Fire

The Ring of Fire is a string of volcanoes and sites of seismic activity, or earthquakes, around the edges of the Pacific Ocean. Roughly 90% of all earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire.


Typhoon Meranti is barreling down on Taiwan, bringing wind speeds of up to 230 miles per hour. Hundreds of people had to  be evacuated in southern Taiwan and China .
