Periodic Table

  n. a table of the chemical elements arranged in order of atomic number, usually in rows so that elements with similar atomic structure and similar chemical properties appear in vertical columns

    - Was discovered in 1869

    - Mendeleev started off just making  a chart but then saw the pattern of the elements and made the              Periodic Table

Noble Gases

 n. any of the gaseous elements helium, neon, argon, etc. in group 18 of the periodic table.

Halogens

  n. any of the elements fluorine, chlorine, bromine, etc. Group 17 of the periodic table. They are reactive nonmetallic elements.

Nonmetals

 n. an element or substance that is not a metal

Metals

   n. a solid material that is typically hard, shiny, malleable, fusible, and ductile, with good electrical and thermal conductivity (iron, gold, silver, copper, etc.)

Lanthanides and Actinides

  • helps to predict the types of chemical reactions that are likely for a reaction
  • indicates elements that share similar characteristics
  • provides information used to balance equations
