Planning A New Government

Articles of Confederation

The articles of confederation is a law that states that for every 5,000 people the state gets one representative.  At the time each state printed its own money. An example is the picture to the right. By the law a state reached statehood when it  had 6000 people in the population. Next comes the Northwest Ordinance, where the Native Americans are pushed out of their land. This led to fights between the  Native Americans and Americans. The government asked for money to pay off debt. This was difficult because states used their own money as previously said. The government decided to make people pay with gold and silver. This was especially hard for farmers who fought in the Revolution because they were paid in paper money

Rebellion In Massachusetts

Farmers were upset about the articles of confederation so they caused violence in western Massachusetts. Many farmers were in debt  and blamed lawmakers. Many farmers landed in jail or lost their farms. Because they couldn't  pay taxes. Daniel Shays was a farmer who fought in the revolution led farmers to a weaponry in Massachusets. They lost badly. James Madison  called the rebellion a warning.

Meeting in Phillidalpia

On May 25th, 1787 the delegates met in Philadelphia to hold the constitutional convention. James Madison was known as the father of the Constitution. The legislature was known as the most important part of the government at the time. In these days only white adult males with land could vote. The delegates argued for weeks until William Patterson suggested the new jersey plan. Someone else suggested the Virginia plan.

Important Compromises

Rodger Sherman was a delegate from Connecticut who came up with the idea of The House of Representatives having two small state representatives and many large state representatives. This pleased all states. The downside for them was a representative could only serve two years. The plan was called The Great Compromise. The people argued about whether or not to count slaves as population. The agreement was every five slaves counted as 3 free men. The next and final  step was a president had to be elected. Therefore the Constitution was born.
