Why does the digitalization of Online Education matter?

Strengths of the Digitalization of Online Education:

Digital Footprint
Timeless Time
Death of Distance
Economies of Scale

Digital Footprint

  • What is a Digital Footprint?
      • a "footprint" that one leaves behind online
  • How does this relate to online education?
      • online education also uses pre-recorded lectures in order to give a lecture to the students
      • this allows them to view/listen to them later
      • every time you log onto the web to access these lectures, one leaves a digital footprint
      • a prime example of this is this online course itself!

Timeless Time

  • What is Timeless Time?
      • a digital network that allows people to negate a sequence by processing information in a synchronous or asynchronous manner
      • synchronous = real time
      • asynchronous = not in real time
  • How does this relate to online education?
      • in a regular classroom setting, students have a set time when their class begins, when it ends, what day(s) it is taught and where it is taught
      • with online classes, students do not have to worry about these factors and instead can watch the lectures wherever and whenever they want

Economies of Scale

  • What are Economies of Scale?
      • the cost structure of a product
      • the more produced, the cheaper the product becomes
      • digital products are concerned about the fixed cost (producing the product)
  • How does this relate to online education?
      • to produce online education to begin with, it is a fixed cost
      • as mentioned above, the more the product is produced, the cheaper it will become
      • online education follows this pattern by the downloadability of content for the class, hardware for the class, software for the class, etc.

Limitations of Digitalization of Online Education:

  • Because of the Timeless Time or Death of Distance, face-to-face interaction is extremely limited and may affect learning styles and performance in the course
  • It requires self-discipline, time management and drive to be successful with completing courses online
  • access to the internet may be a barrier in being able to participate in online courses
  • the quality of instruction may be impacted depending on the teaching style of the instructor and learning style of the student

In the end, choosing to take online courses is...
