COMPUTER NETWORK

A computer network is a group of computers and

other hardware devices that,through communication

channels,can communicate between each other

or share resources between its users.

DATA FLOW

There are three types of data flow:

  • Simplex data flow: in simplex data flow there is only one sender and one receiver (i.e. tv and radio broadcasting);
  • Half duplex data flow: in half duplex data flow both devices can send data, but only once at a time (i.e. walkie talkie);
  • Full duplex data flow: in full duplex data flow both devices can transmit data at the same time (i.e. telephones).

         TYPES OF NETWORK BASED ON GEOGRAPHICAL

                                           EXTENSION

  • LAN: a LAN is a limitated area network extended from 10   meters to 1 kilometer.It is usually used in building like schools or campuses.
  • MAN: a MAN is an area network that covers a whole city.
  • WAN: a WAN is an area network that covers areas like nations or continents,and the most famous one is certainly the Internet.
PEER-TO-PEER/CLIENT SERVER
  • PEER-TO-PEER: a peer-to-peer network is a network where there's no distiction between the devices,so there's no central server,it's not scalable,it's easy to implement but not safe,as everyone has access to the other devices.
  • CLIENT-SERVER: a client-server network is a network where servers offer a service and clients require them,so there are separate dedicated servers and clients,it's scalable,it's difficult and expensive to implement but safer than the peer-to-peer network
TCP-IP MODEL
  • The application layer represents data to the user.
  • The trasport layer supports communications between different devices.
  • The internet layer finds the best path through.
  • The network access layer controls the hardware devices.
