Speed Skating

Speed Skating originated in Northern Europe. It made it's way to Yugoslavia in 1984. The leagues of Speed Skating are Professional League, Professional Championships, Cup games, International Competition, and the Olympics. The sport has changed since the beginning because women were authorized to skate. It was called a demonstration race sport. Which means women would only race to show how the game worked. This was the way until the year of 1960 in Squaw Valley that women could race like men.

                                             Speed Skating

The sport is played by racers sprinting down the track in skates. Speed Skating is a very competitive sport. the general rules are the following:

  1. If disqualified, the player will be given the last place in their heat of final

  2. Skaters will be disqualified if they are caught Impeding, cutting the track, or false starting.

  3. Skaters must change lanes every lap.

  4. The skater that is changing from the outside to the inside has right-of-way.

The length of Speed skating is when the clock stops after the last person crosses the finish. Scoring occurs when the players cross the finish line. The racer that finishes first is in 1st, then 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, finally 6th. The length of the short track is 111 meters long. The long track is a 400 meter oval.

The speed skates are shaped more like a shoe. You need a protective helmet, specific cut-proof gloves, knee pads and chin pads in your suit, you need a neck guard. the neck guard has to be bib style. The last major requirement for the short tracks are ankle protection. For the long tracks you need the same equipment worn for the short track but with the exception of wearing a helmet and pads. These are not required. You need protective eye wear which is optional, the suit does not need to be Kevlar. Long track racers wear a hood built into the suit.

The basic strategy of Speed Skating is to skate as fast as you can in order to beat your opponent without cheating. the major penalty is being disqualified for the race. If you are disqualified, then you will be ranked last in your heat of final. The type of equipment that will be entailed for the races are you need to have a spandex skin suit, a pair of skates. skates are very different from Hockey shoes because hockey shoes allow more ankle compression.
